The role of the trade union movement in modernizing the higher education was discussed at Satbayev University

A seminar meeting for leaders of of universities’ trade union organizations in Kazakhstan was held in Almaty on the basis of Satbayev University. The meeting topic is "The role of trade unions in the social modernization of Kazakhstan." Representatives of RK Science and Higher Education Ministry, heads of universities and trade union movement leaders took part in the discussion.

Seminar opened a dialogue about the future of higher education in the context of digital transformation and how trade unions can help build a socially responsible state.

"Today, more than ever, the task is not just to preserve, but to protect the human capital of education. Every teacher, every scientist should feel that there is a force behind them that can defend his right to decent work and a stable future," said Aigul Mukasheva, Chairwoman of Kazakhstan branch trade union of education, science and higher education employees. – A trade union is not a formality. This is a real mechanism of influence. That is why we consistently conduct training seminars, develop the institute of technical inspectors, and advocate for the interests of educators at all levels, from universities to national venues. We speak on behalf of those who create the future of the country."

Speakers discussed the challenges faced by teachers, staff and students, as well as issues of legal regulation of labor, working hours, workload, occupational safety, financial stability and information openness of trade union organizations. Gulzat Kobenova, Chairwoman of Higher and Postgraduate Education Committee at MSHE, in her report on transformation of higher education in Kazakhstan, noted the importance of regulatory and legal regulation to address occupational safety, reduce occupational risks and ensure workplace safety.

Trade union representatives shared practices and initiatives already working in the field. Satbayev University trade Union demonstrated what real tools can provide support to employees in partnership with the administration:

"Thanks to the collective agreement, flexible schedule and SU Solutions digital platform, we have not recorded a single labor conflict in 2024," said Serik Marlanuly, Chairman of Satbayev University trade union organization.

Seminar ended with Kaizen system master class, where participants learned how to apply efficiency improvement methods in daily trade union work. The participants also got acquainted with the work of Scientific, Educational and Methodological Center for studying the social and labor relations problems.

Seminar showed that today trade unions are not only a guarantor of social rights, but also a key element of the country's sustainable development. It is through such work that a society is formed where work is valued, rights are respected, and the team becomes a real team.
